The news was announced this morning.

BiggerStage has announced a multimillion-euro agreement with Hackman Capital Partners’ Troy Studios and The MBS Group to create a global unscripted production hub at its world-class production facility in Limerick.

Troy Studios, Ireland’s largest and most modern studio facility, spans 26 acres, including four sound stages totalling 100,000 sq. ft (9,290 sq m) with an overall footprint of 350,000 sq. ft (32,516 sq m).

Under the multi-year deal, both parties will invest to attract major international television formats to Limerick, with BiggerStage producing projects on the ground while supporting extensive training and skills development.

In addition, Troy Studios will be a home for original IP development – a destination where the next wave of global hit programmes can be piloted at scale with unrivalled efficiency. The facility will host a number of pilot projects for major international partners in 2026, alongside BiggerStage’s expanding original slate.

Ireland has seen substantial growth in international TV production over the past three years, supporting dozens of SMEs and creating hundreds of skilled jobs. Since its 2021 inception, BiggerStage has produced over 250 hours of primetime programming in Ireland, including The Floor, Next Level Chef, Beat Shazam, Name That Tune, and Don’t Forget The Lyrics. Central to BiggerStage’s success is a cost-effective EU-based production model with a common travel area with the UK.

Speaking from the Prime Time production conference in Canada Pat Kiely, CEO & Founder of BiggerStage, said: “We are truly entering a golden age for the television industry in Ireland. Europe’s first unscripted tax credit will help Ireland compete more effectively on the world stage to become the home of global formats, the fastest-growing area of  television production. This investment in Troy Studio will allow us offer a world class base for international production. Irish crews are renowned as the best in the business and we look forward to creating a sustainable centre of excellence in Limerick, surrounded by great infrastructure, expanding centres of learning and a brilliant hospitality industry. Ireland’s creative industry is on a real high; never has there been a better time to expand our global offering and drive more investment in jobs, training, development and infrastructure.

Also speaking from the Prime Time production conference in Canada, Patrick O’Donovan, Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport said “This announcement is yet another strong signal that Ireland is open, competitive and ambitious when it comes to investment in the creative services sector. The creation of a global hub for unscripted production at Troy Studios will not only attract major international players to Limerick, it illustrates how Ireland has the infrastructure, talent, creativity and production expertise to lead in this space.”

Jason Hariton, Chief Studio and Real Estate Officer at MBS Group added: “We look forward to continuing our work with the BiggerStage team to ensure they have the technical equipment and resources required to continue their leading role in the growth and success of Ireland’s vibrant screen industry.”

Elaine Geraghty, Managing Director Troy Studios, said, “The new deal firmly positions Limerick and Ireland at the forefront of global television production, supported by the unique advantages presented by Ireland’s unscripted tax credit. Together, we are dedicated to building a global production hub that will benefit the creative sector, generate employment, and deliver outstanding original content for audiences worldwide.”

Alastair Boucaut, EVP Global Studio Platform, Hackman Capital Partners, said, “We are thrilled and delighted that BiggerStage has made a long-term commitment to Troy Studios. Our facility was built to welcome bold and innovative companies like BiggerStage that have proven international production success. This collaboration will bring exciting projects to Ireland and strengthen the country’s creative industry.”

This week came the announcement of a US production to begin filming their first series here in Limerick at Troy Studios. This comes on the back of a successful pilot which was produced at Troy Studios in 2023. Stephen Hall, was a graduate of the Creative Broadcast & Film Production programme at LSAD, TUS and is one of the producers of the programme. Paul C.Ryan, Film in Limerick Coordinator, explains more about this

As The Wayfinders begins filming at Troy Studios, Limerick and at locations in the region, we look back at the filming of the pilot episode.

Film in Limerick is proud to welcome back a major international production as filming begins on the epic fantasy series, The Wayfinders, at Troy Studios and on location throughout the region.

Set in a richly imagined world of myth, magic, and ancient conflict, The Wayfinders follows a band of unlikely heroes as they journey through a fractured realm in search of unity, purpose, and power. Featuring immersive storytelling, striking visuals, and a cast of both rising stars and familiar faces, the series promises to captivate fans of high fantasy worldwide.

Pre-production is now underway in Limerick, following the successful filming of the pilot episode in the region in October 2023. The pilot starred Mackenzie Crook (The Office, Pirates of the Caribbean) and was directed by Glen Winter (Smallville, Arrow, The Flash).

The production, from US-based Arrowstorm, and Limerick’s Dark Day Pictures, is expected to generate hundreds of local jobs and bring significant economic impact to the area.

Producer Stephen Hall of Dark Day Pictures added:
“We’re thrilled to bring The Wayfinders Season 1 back to Limerick and the region. As a Limerick local, it’s so exciting to be making our magical show in the region and putting our wonderful locations and talented crew front and center, on the world stage. The support from the councils, businesses and the community has been incredible. We have so much to offer in the Midwest, it’s quite special to build the film community here with the help of Film In Limerick and the talent of the local crew.”

With pre-production already underway, filming is set to begin later this month. Further announcements regarding casting and release dates are expected in the coming weeks.

I had the pleasure to be interviewed on the impact of Troy Studios, by the team at UL’s student publication; Limerick Voice, which is available with this weekend’s edition of the Limerick Leader.

A year on from ‘ The Nightflyers’ programme beginning their production at the Limerick studio, today’s announcement by the Troy board is welcomed by the investors, industry and educational bodies.

With Siún Ní Raghallaigh, Ozzy Kilkenny and Joe Devine taking the microphone this morning, there was a lot of celebrate as well as to look forward to in the coming weeks, months and years to come.

While tributes were being paid to a number of key staff for their hard work over the last number of years, the key points of this mornings well attended announcement focused on how “Troy Studios is on the lips of production executives in California”.

A fourth sound stage will be created to compliment the three existing stages, two of which are housing elements or sets for Nightflyers which screens in the US in December.

150 people will be employed for construction and it is envisioned that there will be further

multiples from what nightflyers generated.

Troy is delivering and a driver for the Audio Video industry, according to Joe Devine, and with the increase demand for content, Limerick and Ireland are well placed on the global film map with today’s announcement.

The studio expansion will also drive local industry as well as training events and special Troy talks with recognized industry guests.

A new BA in Business of Content Production is also being created through educational partner University of Limerick.

There is a prediction of a 30% growth in the film industry over next 5 years and the Section 481 tax incentive still has protential to attract further international investment.

Partnership with all the local educators is vital and further developments with the likes of Limerick Institute of Technology, Limerick School of Art and Design, University of Limerick, Mary Immaculate College and Limerick College of Further Education, will be in progress in the coming months and years to come.

This week sees the arrival of the new first years to the Creative Broadcast & Film Production programme at Limerick Institute of Technology.

With the return of all the other students on Sept 10th, this year will see a huge increase in numbers. We look forward to greeting everyone and working with students on multiple academic and creative events such as the Richard Harris International Film Festival in October, the LIT Music Festival and the Student Showcase in spring 2019.

For future students thinking of joining the programme in 2019 then watch this space for info on forthcoming open days at LIT and other Creative Technology Events.

Screen Training Ireland are delighted to partner with High Res in association with disguise to host the first ‘D3 Fundamental & Advanced Training Course’ in Ireland, which will take place in Dublin at the end of July.  The course will be led by Chris Simcock, an official D3 disguise trainer, who has tailored this course to suit the demands of the current film & television industry.

D3 is a state of the art media server. It is one of the first servers to have the capability to output 10 bit processing depth and is quickly becoming the primary media server platform for live and broadcast environments. The D3’s cutting edge technology can manage and synchronise a variety of different output sources, from LED screens, to projection systems, as well as tracking realtime data from systems like scenery motion control, making it a powerful collaborative tool in helping creative production teams realise their vision.

The course will run over 3 days from Tuesday 24th to Thursday the 26th of July 2018.
