Shannon Consortium Regional Teaching Excellence Award 2018-19

Delighted to have received an award today, for Excellence in Teaching in Higher Education. The awards ceremony took place at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.

Word of thanks to the Shannon Consortium and the advocates who helped all six shortlisted nominees in getting us across the line. Personal thanks goes to Dr. Martin Fitzgearld who guided me to this achievement.

The Shannon Consortium, a collaborative alliance between UL, MIC, and LIT, aims to showcase and champion outstanding practice in higher education teaching from across the Shannon Region through the Shannon Consortium Regional Teaching Award process.

Out of interested faculty from across the Consortium, six academics were ultimately shortlisted for this award.  Being short-listed for the Regional Award is a considerable achievement, as all shortlisted candidates were required to put themselves through the very rigorous process of compiling a detailed portfolio of evidence according to the agreed Shannon Consortium guidelines.  We are delighted to acknowledge the following short-listed candidates:

  • Dr Tom Comyns, Physical Education & Sport Sciences, Education and Health Sciences, UL
  • Simon McGuire, Creative Broadcast and Film Production, LSAD.
  • Dr Muireann McMahon, School of Design, Science and Engineering, UL
  • Dr AnnMarie Ryan, Management and Marketing, Kemmy Business School, UL
  • Dr Fionnuala Tynan,  Reflective Pedagogy and Early Childhood Studies, Faculty of Education, MIC

The external panel met yesterday to consider the applications and decide on an overall winner of the award. The panel comprised Dr Rachael Carkett (University of Bath), Dr Martina Crehan (RCSI) and Dr Mark Glynn (DCU) with Dr Sharon Flynn (NUIG) chairing the meeting.  The Shannon Consortium is delighted to announce that the recipient of this year’s award is Dr Fionnuala Tynan. Huge congratulations to Fionnuala on this very significant achievement.

The award ceremony to acknowledge Fionnuala’s achievement, and the achievements of all of the short-listed candidates, takes place at 12 noon on 7th May in the Halla, Foundation Building in Mary Immaculate College.

Troy Studio announces expansion plans!

A year on from ‘ The Nightflyers’ programme beginning their production at the Limerick studio, today’s announcement by the Troy board is welcomed by the investors, industry and educational bodies.

With Siún Ní Raghallaigh, Ozzy Kilkenny and Joe Devine taking the microphone this morning, there was a lot of celebrate as well as to look forward to in the coming weeks, months and years to come.

While tributes were being paid to a number of key staff for their hard work over the last number of years, the key points of this mornings well attended announcement focused on how “Troy Studios is on the lips of production executives in California”.

A fourth sound stage will be created to compliment the three existing stages, two of which are housing elements or sets for Nightflyers which screens in the US in December.

150 people will be employed for construction and it is envisioned that there will be further

multiples from what nightflyers generated.

Troy is delivering and a driver for the Audio Video industry, according to Joe Devine, and with the increase demand for content, Limerick and Ireland are well placed on the global film map with today’s announcement.

The studio expansion will also drive local industry as well as training events and special Troy talks with recognized industry guests.

A new BA in Business of Content Production is also being created through educational partner University of Limerick.

There is a prediction of a 30% growth in the film industry over next 5 years and the Section 481 tax incentive still has protential to attract further international investment.

Partnership with all the local educators is vital and further developments with the likes of Limerick Institute of Technology, Limerick School of Art and Design, University of Limerick, Mary Immaculate College and Limerick College of Further Education, will be in progress in the coming months and years to come.

Conference a key moment in build up to World Meeting of Families 2018

A cardinal recognised as a lead reformer within the Church hierarchy and chosen by Pope Francis to present Amoris Laetitia – the papacy’s letter on the ‘family’ – will be the star turn at a major conference here next week.

‘Let’s Talk Family: Let’s Be Family’, which will be held at Mary Immaculate College,  Limerick tomorrow week, July 13th, is the first major conference to be held as part of the build up to the World Meeting of Families next year in Ireland.

Key note speaker at the afternoon and evening gathering will be Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, who was chosen by Pope Francis to present Amoris Laetitia following the two Synods on the Family in 2014 and 2015.  The Cardinal, who is Archbishop of Vienna, will give two separate addresses, one specifically on Amoris Laetitia and the other, a public lecture in the evening on ‘The Parish: Family of Families’. During the afternoon session, also, he will lead an academic discussion on Amoris Laetitia one year on.

The event is being organised by MIC’s Institute for Pastoral Studies and, according to its Director, Fr. Eamonn Fitzgibbon, will be a timely opportunity through one of the Pope’s closest confidants to get a deeper understanding of Pope Francis and the Church’s direction on the family.

“The World Meeting of Families next year will be the biggest single event in the life of the Church on this island since the Pope’s visit in 1979.  The build up to it is of huge importance also as it will effectively provide for an ongoing conversation about the family and how we see it and value it in Ireland.  Our conference on July 13th will be one of the biggest platforms to date for that conversation, not least because ofCardinal Christoph Schönborn.  He’s as close to Pope Francis as we can get when it comes to Amoris Laetitia, which is a very significant letter from Pope Francis on his understanding of family.

“There has been quite an amount of controversy about Amoris Laetitia, with some hardliners in the Church arguing it has gone too far.  Others say it hasn’t gone far enough. Some say it is ambiguous.  Cardinal Schönborn will be able to give clarity to us in a way that no one else can other than Pope Francis.  We’re very much looking forward to his visit.”

Fr. Fitzgibbon said that the need for a reforming Church and the leadership of Pope Francis and the likes of Cardinal Schönborn, has never been greater in the context of the family as we know it.

“Amoris Laetitia and the World Meeting of Families could not be better timed.  It’s undeniable that the family, as we have known it, is changing in many respects and is challenged like never before in Ireland. The World Meeting of Families, and the expected visit of Pope Francis in 2018, comes in the midst of a ‘perfect storm’ for the Church, much of it of its own making, which challenges the Church’s teaching on family.”

In addition to the Cardinal’s involvement, other speakers at ‘Let’s Talk Family: Let’s Be Family’ include Martin Kennedy, a freelance trainer and facilitator with church and community groups who has recently been appointed as Pastoral Programme Coordinator for the World Meeting of Families, and Jessie Rogers, a Limerick based lecturer in Sacred Scripture at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, a Godly Play trainer and on her way to qualifying as a spiritual director.
