Following on from yesterday’s ‘first look’ trailer release, we were delighted to have episode director of Nightflyers; Maggie Kiley, to give a talk to the Creative Broadcast & Film Production and Music Technology students at the Millennium Theatre this lunchtime.

Giving her unique insight to film making, Maggie answered numerous questions from students and staff about her experience and previous award winning projects, not to mention her time on Nightflyers (without giving away any secrets).

We are in the final stages of the Offline cut of the Film Limerick Trilogy. The short films, The Apparel, Day Off and Date:Time are now being spotted by the music composers and the final preparations for the delivery to the online and sound mixing team will take place in the coming weeks.

In what has been an ambitious project, realised by Film Limerick Project manager, Ronan Cassidy, and Irish writer and Director Gerry Stembridge, the trilogy of films has brought together both professional and aspiring film makers in Limerick to create a film cultural legacy that will hopefully continue for many years to come.

As editor on the three films, I have had the opportunity not only to work with three new directors and experience their vision for the stories but I have also had the opportunity to train in three assistant editors and give them a practical and first person view of the craft of editing, here at the facilities of Limerick Institute of Technology.

Maeve Humphreys, Patryk Czekalski and Mark Griffin have all worked on scenes for the films as well as give their interpretation and input to the ideas of the films. Similar training opportunities were given on set by Gerry, Ronan and the DOP Paddy Jordan to the different production departments, giving this project its unique selling point for future investment. In some cases the trainees have had other opportunities to work on professional productions around the country which in turn cements the early success of the Film Limerick Trilogy before its even been completed.

As the online post production, grading and sound mixing are nearing, there is a sense of anticipation for the premiere screening of these films by the cast and crew. Also with the impending new academic year in the third level institutions such as Limerick Institute of Technology and Limerick College of Further Education, it is hoped that current and incoming students take advantage of the possible future opportunities that may arise from the back of this project.

Details of the premiere of the trilogy will be made on the Behind the Scenes website HERE.

With principle filming completed on the second film of the trilogy, The Apparel, we have now started the post production.

The “training Trilogy”, a brainchild of Film Limerick Project Manager, Ronan Cassidy, has brought together both professional and novice filmmakers to realise the three short scripts created by Limerick’s Dan Mooney, Peter McNamara and Philip Shanahan.

The post production team consists of LSAD Student; Maeve Humphreys, Mark Griffin (LCFE) and Patryk Czekalski (LIT) (Assistant editors) and myself as lead editor. Limerick Institute of Technology is providing the post production facilities for the offline editing. We are using Avid Media Composer 7 with an Avid ISIS 5500 server for storage.

With the first of the three films, Day Off, already in the middle of post production, the team now move onto the more difficult task of managing two at the same time. With the third (Date Night) in preproduction, the team will be soon working on all the trilogy ensuring that the visual and story links are working along with balancing the ideas of three directors and the support of Ronan and Gerry Stembridge.
In the end we will have three great short films of which we can all be proud of, which will also show off to the rest of Ireland that Limerick has talent and locations for professional film making.

More soon.

This week gone saw three crews of film makers create a ‘Film In A Day’ for this months Behind the Scenes session, and what a trio of films they were. It is by no means an easy feat to bring together so many different people and ideas and create one film let alone three.

With Mark Griffin overseeing the project as a whole, All the teams first met at the George Boutique Hotel in Limerick at 10am on the Sunday. Here Jacinta and her great staff looked after the teas and coffee’s while the teams worked out games plans and other elements for their films.

Filming and editing took place from 11am on the Sunday to 3pm Monday afternoon where the three films then got their chance on the big screen at the Millennium Theatre at Limerick Institute of Technology.

Film 1 – Stamp

This film was very cleverly thought out from beginning to end. With a low dialogue script but heavy on imagery and performances, namely from Maeve McGrath, was shot in 4 different locations including dock road Limerick, raheen and Curraghchase. Given the premise of a post nuclear fallout and betrayal, the audience journeyed with the main character in a battle of survival.

Film 2 – Dr. Noel Hope

Nigel Mercier and Eoin Moloney deliver fantastic comedic perforamces with a heart warming ending that certainly left the audience wanting to see more. With locations on the streets of Limerick and on the quays by the Shannon river, dr.Noel Hope delivers his original advise on unsuspecting patients.

Film 3 – Killer Recession

This was Andrew O’Gorman’s script and more so his moment to show how good of an actor he is too. A chilling piece detailing an interrogation of a terrorist in a city location. With multiple cameras and even a Stephen Hall trademark explosion, chaos ensues as the captor finds his moment to escape.

In all, a great two days and a second ‘film in a day’ is planned for later in the year.

For more information see the Behind The Scenes Website.

A Limerick student, Stephen Hall, who in his second year of the Video & Sound Degree course at Limerick Institute of Technology, has won a video competition in conjunction with Beck Vier.

A national film competition called “Express Your Creativity” which involved developing and shooting a television advert for Becks Vier beer pulled a lot of interest from film makers from around the country. As a result his advert will appear on TV and cinemas regularly throughout November – a fantastic achievement for a 2nd year.

Here is the winning entry.

A decision has been made by the organizers of the LIT Film Festival to expand  to a week of events. These will include:

An Exhibition of Industry equipment from a number of businesses including Sony Professional, Avid Technologies and Tyrell.

Workshops from a number of industry professionals in several fields of television production and post production.

Film Entry Viewing at the Millennium Theatre, LIT

And on the success of last years event, the Awards Night for the Film Competition itself followed by an after show party to round off the night and to end the Festival.

Due to the competition being open to the General public this year as well as college students the interest in entering has been strong with entries from Limerick, Cork, Carlow and Dundalk to name but a few.
