Online workshop for aspiring film editors hosted by Film in Limerick
Free online workshop will explore the art of editing and career opportunities in the field

Innovate Limerick through Film in Limerick is delighted to announce that local film editor Simon McGuire, will join us Wednesday 6 May at 2pm for a free online webinar on working as a film editor.
The workshop is the latest in the Wednesday Workshops series and is open to anyone in the Mid-West with an interest in filmmaking.
With over twenty five years’ experience in film and broadcast editing, with credits including; RTÉ’s Killinaskully, Mattie and Kevin Liddy’s, The Suffering Kind. Simon lectures on the craft of editing at Limerick School of Art & Design (LIT), and is currently undertaking a Doctorate of Education in Creative Media Practice at Bournemouth University, UK.
The workshop, titled ‘To cut a long story short’, will explore Simon’s process and the craft of editing as well as the tools he uses to create stories. The session will also focus on work opportunities in Ireland and further training possibilities for aspiring and developing editors.

Would like to share a little gag reel piece some of the crew and myself did for a wrap party in 2006.
Filmed on location in Ryan’s Pub (Jacksie’s Bar) in Killoskully, Co.Tipperary, and re-edited for the repeat of the series on RTÉ One (Sundays at 8pm) and the RTÉ Player.
We had great fun filming this and trying to recreate the scene, characters and filming style of the original programme. Thanks to; Francis Ryan (playing Jimmy), Mark Murray (Dan) and Kevin Zemrowsky (Timmy) for playing their parts and for all the other crew who helped set it up.

Hospitality Education & Training Centre

Had the pleasure of filming and editing this package for the Hospitality Training & Education Centre, where some of the shots featured on the RTÉ programme, “Ireland On Call’ on Tuesday 21st April.
The package highlights the fantastic work by the centre with the Volunteer learners, who are providing high quality meals for the front line workers across the mid-west.

The operation has also seen significant support from businesses in the region and beyond. Bernadette says: “The support we have gotten has been fantastic. Irema Ireland in Kilmallock supplied the face masks for all our food production and delivery staff. Delivery containers were supplied by Noel O’Connor of Pat O’Connor Butchers, along with plastic crates from Richardson’s Foods and wooden trays from Pat The Baker. Paul Cross Sharpening Services, based in Rathangan, County Kildare, provided uniforms and protective clothing for deliveries. And, Pallas Foods even provided us with Easter eggs for all the food deliveries going out over the Easter weekend!”
Responding to the launch of the new initiative, Bedelia Collins, COVID-19 Co-ordinator of Resources and Service Offers, HSE Mid West Community Healthcare, says the service is very welcome: “Bernadette and her team have been so professional and so easy to work with, which is just what’s needed at the moment. The flexibility that’s been offered with the service is great, especially with the transporting of meals to the different locations in the region. Staff are really touched and very grateful. They are delighted with the quality of food. We started with almost 100 meals on Thursday and expect this to increase significantly in the coming days.”

Killinaskully to be aired on RTÉ again

Killinaskully is to be aired again on RTÉ One, starting this weekend on Sunday 19th at 8pm, with the pilot episode from series one.
This was a great time of my career working with the cast and crew as Assistant Editor and then Editor on the later episodes.

EDITING BANDERSNATCH with TONY KEARNS

Hosted by The Irish Screen Editors Guild (ISE) and the team at Element Post, ISE members were treated to Editor Tony Kearns’ presentation of his contribution to the Emmy winning Black Mirror interactive film Bandersnatch.
Detailing the challenges involved in a complex interactive narrative and the resulting workflow, Tony described how he and his team worked with the multiple timelines needed to maintain the different choices the user can make on the meta narrative.

Steph Green is an Oscar nominated film and TV director. Selected as one of Creativity Magazine’s Top Directors to Watch and Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film, her critically-acclaimed feature film was shot in Ireland and stars Will Forte and Maxine Peake. She has directed top TV shows such as The Americans, The Deuce, Man in the High Castle, American Crime, Bates Motel, You’re the Worst, Billions, Preacher, Luke Cage, Scandal and most recently, Watchmen for HBO. Her recent pilot Dare Me was picked up by USA/Netflix and will premiere in 2020. She also just directed the pilot for The L Word: Generation Q which has a straight-to-series pick up from Showtime.

Day two Creative Broadcast & Film Production opendays and today we are running film screenings in our Clare St Campus and Camera demos in Moylish campus. It has been brilliant to meet with our future students. Huge thanks you to all the staff who helped out, to Art O Laoire, tecnichal supervisor, IT staff, Tom Brophy and Annette Bowman, to Des Farell and Mike Fox LSAD for making us feel so welcome, to lecturers, Simon McGuire, Muireann DeBarra, Mike Gavin, John Greenwood, and Mark Griffin, to our head of department James Greenslate, to Ken Coleman of Game art and design, but most of all to Creative Broadcast and Film production students. I get the pleasure of working with the hardest working, creative, and funfilled crew in the world. Women In Focus – Masterclass in Editing

Despite the poor weather this morning, an enthusiastic audience of editors, students and film makers were present at screen 4 of the LightHouse Cinema, Smithsfield in Dublin. The effort was made to have a rare opportunity to listen to film editor Úna Ní Dhongháile in conversation with fellow editor and director Declan McGrath (Reign of Fire, Killinaskully, Fairytale of Kathmandu, Lomax in Éirinn).
Úna shared her knowledge and insights across her impressive editing career in both film and television. An IFTA and BAFTA-winning Editor, Una is currently working with director Kenneth Branagh, and has a long list of credits including All is True, The Crown, Stan and Ollie, BBC mini-series Les Misérables, and Irish feature film Rosie, along with Three Girls, The Missing, Doctor Who and Ripper Street.
Declan McGrath, an accomplished editor himself, quizzed Úna on a number of the high profile projects and how the path to editing was formed for her. We were told of how she studied Film & Media in D.I.T Aungier Street, were she turned her attention to editing, studying the craft for three years at the National Film and Television School, IADT.
Specially selected clips of her work were screened and talked about in detail, including a opening well paced scene to Les Misérables, a high tension scenes from Three Girls, a comedic timing piece of the Laurel and Hardy biopic Stan & Ollie starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly and ending on a sample of the visual effects composition to The Crown. Declan guided Úna to give the editing audience an insight to the complex editing world in which she has mastered over the past 20 years ending with a quick Q&A.
The new series of The Crown will be released in the coming months.
Open Days for LSAD / LIT

Limerick Institute of Technology Autumn Open Days 2019 will take place at the Moylish and Clare Street campuses in Limerick on Thursday 17th October and Friday 18th October from 9:30am to 2pm
The academic teams of the Creative Broadcast & Film Production and Music Technology & Production, will be at both sites, to demonstrate and chat about the programmes, the industry and the opportunities that are available for new entrants in Sept 2020.
If you cant make it then there will be other opportunities to visit the Moylish campus and experience different events that are put on by the staff and students of the programmes, including; The Richard Harris International Film Festival Awards Show, (Oct 27th Millennium Theatre) and the end of year Student Showcase (April 2020 TBC).
