The Photo Expo – May 2020

Photography is coming to Thomond Park

Whelan Cameras are delighted to announce the inaugural Photo Expo will be coming to Thomond Park this May 9th. The Expo promises to be the biggest celebration of photography in Ireland in 2020, with all the main photographic brands in the industry in attendance. Speakers and demonstrators from Canon, Nikon, Sony and DJI head up an impressive list of more than twenty-five exhibitors that will be in attendance on the day.

Manager of Whelan Cameras David Whelan said of the event “Last year we celebrated our 70th year in business so it felt like a natural step to bring something big to Limerick this year. With the help of some of the biggest names in the industry we hope to make this an event to remember”.

The Photo Expo will be a mix of live demonstrations, touch and try opportunities and keynote speakers giving talks. One of whom will be, Canon Ambassador, Sanjay Jogia a leading internationally acclaimed Award-Winning Wedding Photographer.

Also in attendance will be Nikon Ambassador and fellow Award-Winning Wildlife Photographer Tom Mason. Tom has a huge passion for the natural world and will show his collection of work and give brilliant insights into what it takes to be a great wildlife photographer.

One of Ireland’s leading landscape photographers Bernard Geraghty will discussing Arctic Light in the main hall. Bernard leads tours around Ireland, Italy, Norway and Tenerife to name a few. “Photography allows me to live the dream. I can be alone, at one with the world around me, and yet feel as though I am at the centre of the universe when I capture that split second in time.”

Tickets are €10 and are available through Eventbrite and The Photo Expo website, www.thephotoexpo.ie. Group tickets are also available for groups of ten or more booking together available by emailing info@thephotoexpo.ie. Tickets allow entry to all demonstrations and talks, keynote speeches will be on a first come first served basis on the day.

LSAD Creative Broadcasting & Film Production presents masterclass with Oscar Nominated Director, Steph Green
Steph Green is an Oscar nominated film and TV director. Selected as one of Creativity Magazine’s Top Directors to Watch and Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film, her critically-acclaimed feature film was shot in Ireland and stars Will Forte and Maxine Peake.  She has directed top TV shows such as The Americans, The Deuce, Man in the High Castle, American Crime, Bates Motel, You’re the Worst, Billions, Preacher, Luke Cage, Scandal and most recently, Watchmen for HBO. Her recent pilot Dare Me was picked up by USA/Netflix and will premiere in 2020.  She also just directed the pilot for The L Word: Generation Q which has a straight-to-series pick up from Showtime.

A message from Nora Ní Fhlatharta, Programme Leader of the Creative Broadcast & Film Production Programme, LSAD.

Day two Creative Broadcast & Film Production opendays and today we are running film screenings in our Clare St Campus and Camera demos in Moylish campus. It has been brilliant to meet with our future students. Huge thanks you to all the staff who helped out, to Art O Laoire, tecnichal supervisor, IT staff, Tom Brophy and Annette Bowman, to Des Farell and Mike Fox LSAD for making us feel so welcome, to lecturers, Simon McGuire, Muireann DeBarra, Mike Gavin, John Greenwood, and Mark Griffin, to our head of department James Greenslate, to Ken Coleman of Game art and design, but most of all to Creative Broadcast and Film production students. I get the pleasure of working with the hardest working, creative, and funfilled crew in the world. Open Days for LSAD / LIT

Limerick Institute of Technology Autumn Open Days 2019 will take place at the Moylish and Clare Street campuses in Limerick on Thursday 17th October and  Friday 18th October from 9:30am to 2pm

The academic teams of the Creative Broadcast & Film Production and Music Technology & Production, will be at both sites, to demonstrate and chat about the programmes, the industry and the opportunities that are available for new entrants in Sept 2020.

If you cant make it then there will be other opportunities to visit the Moylish campus and experience different events that are put on by the staff and students of the programmes, including; The Richard Harris International Film Festival Awards Show, (Oct 27th Millennium Theatre) and the end of year Student Showcase (April 2020 TBC).

IFTA WOMEN IN FOCUS – ÚNA NÍ DHONGHAÍLE

The Academy is delighted to host a special IFTA Women in Focus Masterclass with Ireland’s foremost film and TV Drama Editor Úna Ní Dhonghaíle ACE.

Úna will share her knowledge and insights across her impressive editing career in both film and television. An IFTA and BAFTA-winning Editor, Una has worked with directors such as Kenneth Branagh, in a career spanning 20 years. In that time, her long-list of credits includes All is True, The Crown, Stan and Ollie, BBC mini-series Les Misérables, and Irish feature film Rosie, along with Three Girls, The Missing, Doctor Who and Ripper Street.

Having studied Film & Media in D.I.T Aungier Street, Úna turned her attention to editing, studying the craft for three years at the National Film and Television School, IADT. In 1999, Una brought five of her graduate films to premiere at the Cannes film festival, one of which, Secondhand, won the top prize in the Cinefondation section of the festival.

Over the past 20 years Úna has edited on a variety of projects, from documentaries to film and television drama. Her body of work contains editing credits on some of the biggest shows in television, including The Missing, Doctor Who and Ripper Street, all of which have earned Una IFTA Award nominations for ‘Best Editing Drama’, as well as BAFTA TV Craft nominations.

In 2017, Úna won her first IFTA award for her work on BBC’s drama series Three Girls, based on the Rochdale child sexual abuse scandal. Her work on the highly-acclaimed drama also earned her a BAFTA TV Craft Award, Women in Film and TV Award and a RTS Craft & Design Award to add to her prestigious list of accolades.

Úna has edited several major international projects including Netflix’s hit series The Crown and Stan & Ollie, the Laurel and Hardy biopic starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. More Recently, Úna worked with Kenneth Branagh on his passion project All is True, a look at the final days in the life of renowned playwright William Shakespeare. Úna will again collaborate with Branagh on his adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Death on The Nile, and is currently working on Misbehaviour starring Keira Knightly and Jessie Buckley, which is to be released next year.

Media & Events Experts offer work placements to CBFP Students

For the second year running, leaders in local media, events and festivals were invited to the Millennium Theatre to speak to Creative Broadcast & Film Production students on opportunities of work experience.

This valuable session gives the students opportunities to network and decided on what career paths they might like to take during their third year on the programme. In the inaugural year, a number of students availed of working on the Richard Harris International Film Festival as well as the Hear Say Festival where they gained knowledge and connections to industry leaders.

With the RHIFF approaching, the staff and students of the CBFP will once again be producing the acclaimed awards for for the festival. This being the third year for the RHIFF, the awards show will be 10 years old, as it was originally designed for the Limerick Film Festival (LIT Film Festival) back in 2010. As always we are hard working on the design of the awards show and look forward to streaming live on the night as well as recording for later release on the platforms.

Huge thank you to #CaoimheDoyle and #JeanMcgrath for delivering an amazing, fun, and energetic workshop on live #foley recording. We had a packed and enraptured audience at #themillenniumtheatretoday. I will never look at at a bunch of celery in the same way ever again. Thanks to our student assistants for all their help in setting up, Louise, Lelia, Jamie, Julie, and Thomas and to Gerry Meagher, Thomas Mulcahy & Jamie & Julie for operating the sound and lighting. Creative Broadcast & Film Production – New Academic Year

This week marks the third year of the Creative Broadcast and Film Production Programme (CBFP) at LIT Moylish. Over the past three years many changes that were made for this programme (formerly the Video & Sound Technology Programme) have flourished and have helped increase the student numbers in applying each year. This year being no exception.

With the merger of the in-house Limerick Film Festival with the Richard Harris International Film Festival, The Annual Student Showcase event, Studio Tours, In-House production Unit, as well as special guest lectures and industry workshops, students of the CBFP have more opportunities to learn, network and test their skills in industry standard practices than ever before.

Also with the fact that the CBFP programme is now a part of the Department of Design at Limerick School of Art and Design, there will be further opportunities for collaboration with other design programmes in both the Clare Street and Clonmel campus’.

While this years cohort is now full and beginning in the coming days, (and we are excited to see the new talent) I would encourage other second level students (5th & 6th years) to check out the events that are happening during this academic year at the Moylish campus, including the Open Days and The Richard Harris International Film Festival in October (which the students and staff produce the now acclaimed Live Streamed Awards Show), and the student showcase which will take place in the spring of 2020.

Cast and Crew of the short film, ‘Detainment’ which won the overall award at the Richard Harris International Film Festival and went on to be shortlisted for the Academy Awards 2019.

Also keep an eye on the programme facebook page for info on the guest lectures and workshops which some are open to the public as well as current students.

6K from BlackMagic is here

BlackMagic have decided to release the details of the 6K version of their Pocket Cinema Camera.

I would wonder if all those who are still on the waiting list for a 4K Version to arrive will they be changing their orders.

There are some very nice tech advancements…

KEY FEATURES

  • Active Canon EF Mount
  • Super 35-Sized HDR Sensor
  • Record 6K 6144 x 3456 up to 50 fps
  • Dual Native 400 & 3200 ISO to 25,600

However I question this one and it’s target market. I would assume the quality is superb but with a tag of over $2500 (Irish price would be more I would say), this camera now falls into a very saturated price category.

Depending on the user and their requirements for filming, is there a need from clients for 6K (at this time)? Does the client have 6K playback to maximize the viewing experience of the package?

Also with other 4K cameras, including the previous pocket cam (pictured above next to the 6k) would this be the better buy? I do however like the idea of all the EF glass now compatible with the BlackMagic pocket though, (long over due).
