Photography is coming to Thomond Park
Whelan Cameras are delighted to announce the inaugural Photo Expo will be coming to Thomond Park this May 9th. The Expo promises to be the biggest celebration of photography in Ireland in 2020, with all the main photographic brands in the industry in attendance. Speakers and demonstrators from Canon, Nikon, Sony and DJI head up an impressive list of more than twenty-five exhibitors that will be in attendance on the day.
Manager of Whelan Cameras David Whelan said of the event “Last year we celebrated our 70th year in business so it felt like a natural step to bring something big to Limerick this year. With the help of some of the biggest names in the industry we hope to make this an event to remember”.
The Photo Expo will be a mix of live demonstrations, touch and try opportunities and keynote speakers giving talks. One of whom will be, Canon Ambassador, Sanjay Jogia a leading internationally acclaimed Award-Winning Wedding Photographer.

Also in attendance will be Nikon Ambassador and fellow Award-Winning Wildlife Photographer Tom Mason. Tom has a huge passion for the natural world and will show his collection of work and give brilliant insights into what it takes to be a great wildlife photographer.

One of Ireland’s leading landscape photographers Bernard Geraghty will discussing Arctic Light in the main hall. Bernard leads tours around Ireland, Italy, Norway and Tenerife to name a few. “Photography allows me to live the dream. I can be alone, at one with the world around me, and yet feel as though I am at the centre of the universe when I capture that split second in time.”

LSAD Film Students Produce Pat Shortt’s New Podcast

Students and staff of the Creative Technologies Programmes of LSAD, LIT have been working with Writer, Actor and Comedian Pat Shortt on his new Podcast, ‘The Wellness Hour with Paaaah.’
Released on Tuesday Feb 4th on all main podcast platforms, season one will consist of a new episode for the next six weeks.

The deadline (Feb 7th) is fast approaching for the inaugural Catalyst Film Festival, which will take place in Limerick on the 20-21st of March.
The organisers are encouraging student entries to the festival “that prioritizes stories and storytellers currently underrepresented on screen and behind the camera.”

EDITING BANDERSNATCH with TONY KEARNS

Hosted by The Irish Screen Editors Guild (ISE) and the team at Element Post, ISE members were treated to Editor Tony Kearns’ presentation of his contribution to the Emmy winning Black Mirror interactive film Bandersnatch.
Detailing the challenges involved in a complex interactive narrative and the resulting workflow, Tony described how he and his team worked with the multiple timelines needed to maintain the different choices the user can make on the meta narrative.

In this course participants will gain a full insight into the role and responsibilities of the assistant editor.

- Organising project and footage
- The difference between fiction and non-fiction assisting
- Expectations of performance from the assistant editor
Preparation
- Ingest of rushes
- Logging and synching
- Treatment of non-standard archive
Editing
- Sound work – Track laying on sequences
- Adding Footage as the edit continues – Moving footage between machines – Importance of Master project
- Preparation of exports/promo material – Choice of codecs for export – Using third party compression software – BITC
Finishing
- Relinking to full-res – Project parameters (SD, HD,2k etc.) – How to check the relink is correct – Troubleshooting relink problems
- Creation of deliverables for Grade and Mix
Participant Profile:
This one-day course is aimed at those interested in moving into assistant editing and who wish to gain a thorough overview of the role and the responsibilities it entails. Applicants should have a working knowledge of Avid Media Composer and/or Adobe Premiere and/or FCPX. There will be a one-day supervised placement with an editor working in non-fiction offered to those interested.

The Leamy School on Hartstonge St, Limerick where the Frank McCourt Museum has been housed.
With the recent closure of the Frank McCourt Museum in Limerick, we were on site to record images of the museum as well as an emotional interview with the museum’s curator and founder Una Heaton.
Containing stories of the foundation of the Museum, the many national and international visitors, the unveiling of the bust of Frank by his wife Eileen and family, Una retells her journey and ultimately the very difficult decision to close the doors for the last time. ‘Tis…the end, also frames the many artefacts, the classroom, bedroom and kitchen reconstructions in the legacy this great museum has given to Limerick over the years.

The post-production of this short documentary was completed using Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, using archive footage of the museum filmed over a ten year period.

Scriptwritting Masterclass with Ailbhe Keogan

This week, Creative Broadcast & Film Production are offering another great industry event to attend. We have a script development masterclass with award winning scriptwriter Ailbhe Keogan.
Ailbhe started her writing career with her novel Molly & the Cyclops, published by Hag’s Head Press, in 2006. From there, she moved into screenwriting. Her first feature film, Run & Jump was selected as part of the Berlin Talent Campus Script Station and the Sundance Institute’s lab. Directed by Oscar-nominated Steph Green, it premiered at Tribeca in 2012 and the script went on to win numerous awards including a 2014 IFTA nomination and a Zebbie for best screenplay 2014.
Her second feature film, Joy & Mully, went into production in 2018, a co-production between Zentropa Films (Denmark) and Subotica (Ireland) She is currently working on Sidelined, a feature film for Parallel Films and the Irish Film Board. Ailbhe was selected for Guiding Lights 8, the UK film industry’s leading mentoring programme. She was under the mentorship of Alex Garland.
Ailbhe’s short film script, Take Me Swimming, was one of four films to be funded by the Irish Film Board Focus Shorts scheme in 2016 and premiered at the Cork Film Festival 2017. It stars Barry Ward, Olwin Fouere and B.J. Hogg. Ailbhe is on the board of the Kerry Film Festival and has worked with the Youth Justice programme for many years in conjunction with KDYS.
