Tuesday April 10th

Director David keating: Film director and screenwriter, His writing includes work for Columbia/Sony Pictures and Jim Sheridan’s script for INTO THE WEST. Director:  THE LAST OF THE HIGH KINGS, (Miramax / IFB) with Jared Leto, Gabriel Byrne and Christina Ricci. WAKE WOOD (Hammer / IFB) with Aidan Gillen, Timothy Spall and Eva Birthistle. CHERRY TREE (MPI / IFB) — with Naomi Battrick, Anna Walton and Sam Hazeldene. CHERRY TREE was selected to open Film4 Frightfest 2015 in London’s Leicester Square, it had its US premiere at Lincoln Plaza in NYC November 2015.

David will be leading an interactive discussion on the role of the film director on a feature film, how to develop communication skills with crew members from distinctly varied disciplines: image, sound, design, production, finance. The language of direction for fiction, use of the Kuleshov effect in montage and narrative, subtext analysis and directing actors for screen. (Millennium Theatre LIT 11:00 – 13:00)

The talk will be followed by an intensive workshop (numbers limited) with collaboration from The Limerick School of Acting on directing actors for the screen. (Aula Maxima, LIT 14:00 – 16:00)

 

Wednesday April 11th

4 Corner Debate  – Piracy

“Piracy is threatening the livelihoods of thousands of people who work in

Marie-Therese Garvey – Documentary Production

Marie-Therese is an award-winning documentary film producer and founder of creative production company, Greater Than Ten Miles. (Atlantic (2016), narrated by Brendan Gleeson). In her talk she will explore the art of storytelling through mixed visual documentary modes, research skills in production, and documentary finance.  (Millennium Theatre LIT 14:00 – 16:00)

 

Thursday April 12th

Scott Smith – The Final Edit

Scott has over 25 years of experience as an online editor, and 15 as colourist. He’s worked on hundreds of programmes, promos, and TVCs for major studios and broadcasters in the United States and Europe, including: Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios, MGM, Disney, Castle Rock, FX, TNT, NBC, HBO, E! Entertainment, BBC, ITV, Channel 5, ZDF, S4C, UKTV, RTE, TV3, TG4, and UTV. He listens to his clients, and can take a project from script to finished broadcast programme. His primary tools are DaVinci Resolve, Avid Symphony, and Autodesk Smoke. The talk will be followed by an workshop on Da Vinci Resolve (Block 15C01 LIT 14:00 – 16:00)

Call for Entries

Creative Europe Desk Ireland MEDIA and Filmbase invite media students in Ireland to apply for support for the production and distribution of graduate film and media projects. This support will be open to any student, or groups of students, collaborating on the creation of an audiovisual film, documentary or multimedia project as part of their final year coursework.

These awards will provide support for film and media students graduating into the Irish and European audiovisual industries and to encourage graduates to develop the essential skills necessary for creating future funding applications. As such the application process for support replicates key aspects of the application process for Irish and European project funding.

Two projects will be awarded a cash contribution of up to €750 to support their production budgets and to facilitate the development and implementation of a marketing and distribution strategy for their completed works. In addition, film-based projects will be offered access to facilities at Filmbase and individual consultation on festival strategy and international marketing for short films.

Students interested are invited to attend an Information Session on Tuesday 6th March from 3.30 – 4.30pm in Filmbase. This session will present an overview of the key supports available from Filmbase and CED Ireland, provide key advice for making funding applications, and answer specific questions on this new initiative. We are pleased to announce details of the premier screening of Creative Broadcast & Film Production student showcase 2018.
“Frame by Frame” will run from April 10th – 12th in the Millennium Theatre LIT. More details to follow. Spread the word

A new series of Short Film Bursaries has been announced by Limerick City and County Council this week. There are two available and will amount to €8000.

There is an application process followed by an interview process which is adjudicated by a selected panel.

Eligibility is made out as follows:

Individuals and organisations based in Limerick are invited to apply for the above bursaries to support film projects at all stages, whether in the initial phase of research and development or at the later stages of production, given that they:

  •   Are professional film makers;
  •   Are based in Limerick;
  •   Are submitting an original proposal or development work in relation to an existing piece.

Limerick Short Film Bursaries will not be allocated to fund the following:

  •   Proposals which do not have an artistic objective, for example, sport, heritage, historical, tourism, general recreation, etc.;
  •   Persons in full time undergraduate and postgraduate level study;
  •   Charity fundraisers;
  •   Artist in Schools Residencies (separate grant funding stream);
  •   Tyrone Guthrie Bursaries (separate grant funding stream);
  •   Publications;
  •   Day to day operational or administrative costs;
  •   Capital requests for building improvements to workspaces and venues.

 LIMERICK SHORT FILM BURSARIES 2018

New to the CAO for 2018 is the Creative Broadcast & Film Production Level 8 programme based in the Moylish Campus of LIT.

This practical based programme is over four years and includes modules across a range of departments of Broadcast and Film Production.

With the arrival of Troy Studios and the ‘Nightflyers’ series, which is currently under production, Limerick is quickly becoming the new destination for high end programming and film. (See Link: Limerick’s Troy Studios prepares for full flight as Nightflyers takes off – Photo 1 of 4 – Limerick )

Simon finishing the edit on “Kemmy”

Currently in post is a documentary on the legacy of the late great Jim Kemmy.

This story examines  how Jim Kemmy’s courage and vision brought about social, ideological, and economic change in Ireland and in his native city.

Directed and produced by Dave Burns & Edited by Simon McGuire, ‘Kemmy‘ is due to hit the film festival circuit in the Autumn of 2017.
