Film News Limerick

Monday 3rd October saw the launch of the 4th Richard Harris International Film Festival. As ever, on hand to give details of the exciting lineup coming this year was Festival Director Zeb Moore who announced that amongst the special guests would be non other than Fionnula Flanagan and Stephen Rea.

Also this week saw the inaugural open night of the Millennium Film Club based at the Millennium Theatre, Limerick.

MILLENNIUM Theatre at LIT is rebooted with a new stage and sound system under Gerry Meagher, lecturer in Theatre Studies.

Meagher worked for decades as Belltable production manager while Declan McLoughlin (of The Royal Film Festival) ran that venue’s successful world cinema club.

Together, these dedicated providers of screen scintillation are launching Millennium Film Club. The Club is open to all comers, o18s for some events.

Make your way to Moylish by bus, foot or vehicle for Tuesday nights. There will be 8pm screenings from October 4 to December 6, with the gala Christmas movie to be ‘Gone With the Wind’, not seen here since its mid-WW2 release.

“The membership fee is €2 only and that will cover two seasons in the year, autumn and spring,” a happy Mr McLoughlin tells Arts page. “We decided on the film club as there is a lot of product out there that is never screened in Limerick. Sure, there are other film clubs and cinemas around but there is room for all of us.

“‘Youth’ is our first feature on October 4, a film made last year with Michael Caine and Jane Fonda. On Tuesday October 11 we are showing the documentary ‘Bobby Sands: 66 Days’ [excellent – RR].

“We will also be showing the City of Culture funded Trilogy of films over the eight weeks, ‘The Apparel’, ‘Day Off’ and ‘Date: Time’ and we are open to suggestions from the audience about they would like to see brought in”.

Limerick Film Festival are also on board as supporters of the festival and will be working closely with Gerry and Declan throughout the coming months and years on this great new addition to the film culture of Limerick.

Parking is free and Millennium Theatre’s bar will be open before shows, and if the evening requires an interval.

Season tickets for eight features and any preceding shorts will be €50 or arrive per film for €8. Concessions are €6 and LIT students, the lucky varmints, are a cool €5 in. ACCESS Cinema is provider; booking at http://www.litmt.ie and email to filmclub@lit.ie; tickets at door.

Sister festival to the Limerick Film Festival, the LIT Music Festival, takes place next week. As its a special celebration and if you are in the Limerick Region next week to check out some of the great events.

This year marks a very special milestone for Music Technology at LIT. Ten years.
And as part of our celebration of the course going from strength to strength, this year’s music week, which is taking place from the 29th of February to the 4th of March shall be bigger and better than ever!

Music Week is an annual event held on the grounds of LIT, run by the students of the various years of the Music Tech course. Just like previous years we are hosting a range of creatively inspiring workshops and performances throughout the week, this year including a performance from well-known Limerick band: Windings, and a special AV show from DJ Kormac.

LIT Music Week is also a great opportunity for students hoping to study at LIT in the future. The events give great insight into some of the activities conducted by current LIT students.
Having said that – These events are open to the public, all are welcome to come along and support local and national talents!

Q&A Session with director Terry McMahon, Actor Moe Dunford and DOP Michael Lavelle

A fascinating film screening and Q&A session afterwards was had at 69 O’Connell Street to mark the end of the 3rd Annual Richard Harris International Film Festival. Terry McMahon’s acclaimed feature, Patrick’s Day, played out to a well attended and spell bound audience on Sunday 25th October.

With the haunting music from the genius that is Damien Dempsey along with the captivating performance of Moe Dunford, the artistic eye of DOP Michael Lavelle, the precession editing by Emer Reynolds and the creative force of director Terry McMahon gives audiences a new insight to the topic of mental health which is more often misunderstood and stigmatised in todays society.

If you haven’t seen this film then it needs to be on your list. Lessions are here also for film makers. It is possible for a meaningful film that connects and speaks to audiences, to be created for a budget of 400,000 Euro.

Mood Poem to Screen in Limerick

To mark the anniversary of The Pigtown Fling there will be a showing of Mood Poem, the Crude Media documentary based on the artists on the production, and their life in Limerick.
The screening will be in The BellTable Arts Centre, 69 O’Connell St on Sunday 20th Sept (a year to the date since that wonderful night) at 4pm. This will be introduced by, John Greenwood where there will be an announcement on how the idea of legacy is progressing. This will include the announcement of a competition that they have just secured a 1000 euro Prize for. (More details on the day).
The screening it is of course free and please bring your friends.

Successful Screening for Film Limerick

A very positive and informative evening was had at Dolans on the Dock Road on Monday night last (29th June)

With a full house in attendance of film makers, the media and the crews of the Film Limerick Trilogy films, short excerpts of the first two films that are nearing completion were screened along with a panel discussion.

Writer, Daniel Mooney (The Apparel), Director, Peter Delaney (The Apparel) and Director, Stephen Hall (Day Off) gave a in-depth insight to their experience of working on the unique Film Limerick project answering questions from Film Limerick Project Manager Ronan Cassidy and members of the audience.

With the third film ‘Date:Time’ to go into production on July 22nd, this event has generated a positive vibe with the cast and crew, giving them a clear idea of how the films are progressing and the advantages of working on the Film Limerick project.

Also mentioned were the two Bursary films, Lost and Found and The Clockmakers Dream. Both of which received €15,000 each through the  Limerick City of Culture 2014, Film Limerick and Behind The Scenes, and are in the final stages of post production. The teaser trailer for Lost and Found was screened also which stars many local and familiar Limerick Acting talent. This trailer can be viewed below.

Behind the Scenes would like to again thank all who worked, volunteered or simply supported the trilogy project and look forward to the completion of the final film and the premiere of all three at a date in September 2015.

Limerick Film Studio A Closer Reality!

Today marks the start of a possible historic journey for the Limerick Film Industry. Announced this morning from Limerick City and County Council was the deal to purchase the former Dell building in the Plassey Technological Park for the use of creating a Film Studio.

LIMERICK CITY AND COUNTY COUNCIL AGREES PURCHASE OF FORMER DELL SITE TO FACILITATE PROPOSED MAJOR INTERNATIONAL MEDIA HUB

Media Release, Monday, 25th May 2015

LIMERICK, IRELAND- Limerick City and County Council has announced that it has agreed terms on the purchase of a 350,000 sq foot building in Plassey as part of its strategy for infrastructural development. It is proposed that the building will house a major international media hub to facilitate the production of film and television content and to provide support services.

The local authority remains in discussions with Ardmore Studios, Ireland’s top Film and Television Studios, for the provision of much needed studio infrastructure for the Mid-West.

The proposed location of the international studio which the Council has purchased in the region of €5-6m is a former industrial building on Plassey Park Road in Limerick, approximately 25 acres in size with 7.5 acres of development land available and 750 car spaces.

A former manufacturing facility, it was leased successfully and visited by thousands as ‘The Culture Factory’ venue for Limerick City of Culture 2014.

Welcoming the news, Limerick City and County Council Chief Executive Conn Murray said the purchase is ‘an important step in the local authority’s plan to create an international film centre and major sustainable employment in Limerick’.

“Our discussions with Ardmore Studios are continuing at pace since we first announced that we were working together late last year,” Mr Murray said. “We’re delighted that subject to finalising details, we have agreed terms on the purchase of the former Dell building in Plassey. The purchase of this building is the first step in our strategy to create major studio facilities in Limerick. The next part of the process is to finalise our discussions with Ardmore Studios. We have been encouraged by the response to this initiative.”

Mr Murray said he is hopeful that the purchase of the building will lead to major sustainable employment and the creation of a new film industry in Limerick.

“There is a clear and urgent demand for large scale studio space and support buildings in Ireland, and  many of the pre-conditions necessary for the creation of studios already exist in Limerick,” he added.

“It is evident that success is based on government support, direct investment and commitment given to the vision of those involved. We hope that this is just the start of a project which will create a new industry and a huge number of jobs locally. It’s also a logical legacy of Limerick’s year as National City of Culture 2014 and its bid to become European Capital of Culture for 2020.”

Well another year is over for the Limerick Film Festival and I have now switched my attention back to other projects (Editing the Film Limerick Trilogy Films, Behind The Scenes, LIT Work and the Doctorate)

We had a great festival, with an increase on numbers overall for the guest speakers, screenings and Awards show.

Thanks to all who helped out… (too many to name here) but you all know who you are.

I’ll be working over the summer on next years details and structure and hopefully in September there will be more information to give you.
