Seamus Fogarty is a London-based Irish singer-songwriter. Combining alternative, folk, and electronica styles, Seamus released his 3rd album, A Bag of Eyes (via Domino Recording Company) on November 6th 2020.

A wholly different sonic prospect to 2017’s much-lauded The Curious Hand, Seamus (weary of the guitar, and seeking something darker than its predecessor) chose to lean more heavily on synths and drum machines, and additionally, to self-produce. “It was about creating and exploring new sound worlds,” Fogarty says. “Experimenting with new ways of incorporating electronics into the songwriting process, and in some cases dispensing with conventional songwriting processes altogether.”

On A Bag OF Eyes, there is industrial judder, slacker-fuzz guitar, a cacophony of saxophones. On one track, ring-modulated drums kick in with oscillating fury. Another moves from 90s’ shit-hole grunge venue to sleazy jazz joint in four minutes. Whilst on a third, a synth is deployed with the express purpose of sawing the listeners’ ears in half, Fogarty attests.

However, beneath them lie fragments of melody, image, drone; a flicker of banjo, an electronic pulse. “I like to purposely make music that clashes with the more traditional stuff that I do,” he says.

Fogarty’s celebrated storytelling is at home in this new sound world, rambling between the fantastical and the mundane: nuns playing volleyball, horses on clifftops, lives glimpsed through rear windows. There are echoes of his own past, the loss of dear friends. Ireland, London, and two views of San Francisco, 15 years apart. It is bus stops, house fires and Jimmy Stewart.

An exciting new opportunity has just been launched for upcoming film scriptwriters via Film In Limerick and The Writer’s Factory.

PRESS RELEASE (from website HERE)
  • Introduction to Screenwriting Course

    Begins Monday 19th October 2020. 7pm – 9.30pm (online)

Innovate Limerick through Film in Limerick and Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board are delighted to announce the launch of Writers Factory, a new screenwriting programme for budding film & TV writers in the Mid-West.

This 22-week programme is designed by legendary UK script-guru Phil Parker and is available for the first time in Ireland through a partnership with Film in Limerick. In recent years, Writers Factory has grown in to the gold-standard of screenwriting courses and has launched the careers of many successful screenwriters.

The programme will take place online on Monday nights at 7pm to 9.30pm, starting on 19 October and running for 22 weeks. The Writers Factory programme is suitable for both aspiring and emerging screenwriters with an interest in writing for film and TV.

The introductory course will give participants a strong foundation in the craft and art of screenwriting and help them to develop a framework for screenwriting practice. Participants will complete a 10 minute short script as part of the course and have the opportunity to pitch their project to producers and directors and receive feedback.

The course develops from an initial lecture and screening format to workshops, with group discussions and practical exercises being used throughout the programme. There is extensive use of screenings of short films and feature film extracts, handouts including first and second draft short screenplays, as well as extracts from key books, with lecturing, group discussion, individual writing exercises and small group tutorials.

The programme, revised by Phil Parker especially for Mid-West participants will be taught by Writers Factory teacher Eleanor Yule. Yule is an award-winning writer/director, known for her feature film ‘Blinded’ and her television documentaries with Michael Palin and teaches screenwriting at the Liverpool Screen School at Liverpool John Moores University.

The initiative aims to further develop film and TV talent in the Mid-West region. The subsidised cost for the 22-week course is €100 per participant.

To enrol please click this link HERE to go to the website and complete the short registration form and make payment.

If you have any questions about the programme please email paul.ryan@limerick.ie

Please note spaces are strictly limited. We will send further details to participants on how to access the online classroom space in advance of the first session.

    Happy screenwriting!

The Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival is now in its tenth year, and for its first time will be a virtual one this year!  It will also celebrate 10 years of the festival and Limerick as a UNESCO Learning City-Region. The festival will be held from Monday 28th September to Sunday 4th October 2020 and the theme is ‘Celebrating and Building Learning Communities‘.

The festival marks a celebration of lifelong learning and promotes learning in Limerick through a wide variety of creative, enjoyable and informative events.  The festival provides a timely opportunity to reflect on the many contexts in which we are learning – in the home, with friends and neighbours, in formal educational settings, in the workplace etc – as well as exploring new ways and opportunities for learning.

For event organisers, this represents an opportunity to engage directly with the public and potential attendees on courses or new members and to be part of an event which shows Limerick in a positive light!

Here are some examples of how we think our first Virtual Festival might look, and ideas for interactive events and activities that may be provided virtually. The types of presentations/activities may include, but is not limited to, online interactive information sessions; live presentations /broadcasts via zoom/YouTube channel/Facebook streaming, short films, pre-recorded events/activities, debates/discussions, information sessions and live chats.

Just some activities that can be presented interactively online may include the following:

  • Cooking – simple recipe of bread/scones
  • Dancing, yoga, keep fit
  • Health and Wellness
  • How to use Twitter/Facebook /Instagram
  • Learning how to grow your own food
  • Learning Sign Language
  • Learning to knit/crochet/sew
  • Local history
  • Panel discussions and webinars
  • Physics/Chemistry experiments
  • Presenting art projects, competitions
  • Presenting research
  • Virtual awards ceremonies

The Learning Limerick Steering Group provided online training sessions on the top tips and tricks for running online events for our event organisers on 8th and 9th July in collaboration with the Carmichael Centre and Alice PR and Events, Dublin. The slides and recordings from this training are now available for all event organisers to view.

As part of the festival, there will be a seminar held by Learning Limerick on Tuesday 29th September 10am– 11am  ‘Lifelong Learning during COVID – the Business Community Response’. In this seminar, we bring together speakers from a number of different local business sectors in the Limerick Region to present and discuss how they have responded to the challenges presented by Covid-19. The Seminar provides an exciting opportunity to hear experiences from diverse sectors and to explore the commonalities in learning for all. Skills and talent development and empowering staff during the crisis and thoughts for the future will also be explored.

Also during the week, the Irish Network of UNESCO Learning Cities will be hosting a collaborative Learning Day for Ireland on 30th September 2020. As well as the events hosted by Learning Limerick, Cork, Belfast, Dublin and Derry Strabane Learning Cities will all be holding events on the day and we look forward to attending events hosted by all five of the Learning Cites!

We are really looking forward to this year’s festival. Contact Yvonne at ylane@paulpartnership.ie without delay to register your interest in hosting an event and to be a part of a wonderfully positive week for our region!
