Limerick Insider March 2012

In this episode, the Limerick Insider takes a look back at some of the highlights from a very busy month of March in Limerick.

On 17th March, University of Limerick founding president, Dr Ed Walsh led more than 4,000 colourful participants in Limerick’s St Patrick’s Day Parade as Grand Marshal of what is believed to be the largest parade in the country.

The theme of the 2012 Limerick St Patrick’s Day Parade was ‘The World in Union’ which celebrated Limerick’s huge community base, its ethnicity and diversity and the fact that St Patrick’s Day is now truly a global phenomenon.

The 220 member University of Missouri Marching Band took the top prize at the Limerick International Band Championship on 18th March in front of 40,000 spectators in Limerick.

Twenty marching bands featuring musicians from across Ireland, Europe and the USA performed for the 42nd International Band Championship which is part of the Limerick St Patrick’s Festival.

The 2012 Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival took place from Monday, March 26th to Sunday, April 1st.

More than 140 FREE events spanning both City and County will took place in Limerick to celebrate lifelong learning across the region through a variety of enjoyable and informative activities.

Sports mad Limerick is always the place to be for rugby in Ireland. Visitors are offered an unforgettable experience – a weekend in the home of Munster’s passionate Thomond Park Stadium! Our video gives a teaser of what’s to be expected on a rugby trip to Limerick.

And finally, we introduce you to Declan and Eithne – two of Limerick’s friendly Street Ambassadors. If you pop into them in Limerick, make sure to have a chat with them and they will advise you the best places to visit, eat and shop in Limerick.

LIT FILM FESTIVAL Special Guest – Lelia Doolan

The LIT Film Festival 2012 are delighted to announce another addition to the festival schedule this year. Actress, Director and Producer, Lelia Doolan (Bernadette: Notes on a Political Journey) will be screening her documentary followed by a Q&A session where both students and filmmakers have an opportunity to experience her talent and knowledge of the industry. A date and time will be confirmed in the coming days as well as all the details for the rest of the 3 day festival.

Hi All,

Pleased to announce the return of Limerick Insider for a second series on the website limerick.ie

In this months episode we take a look at the popular tourist attractions available in Limerick City and County, including the Foynes Flying Boat Museum, newly refurbished Limerick City Art Gallery and the Adare Heritage Centre to name but a few.

Watch out for our film crew during the coming months as we cover other venues and great events happening in the region.

LIT FILM FESTIVAL – CALL FOR ENTRIES – 4 Days to go

A quick reminder that it’s just Four Days to go for the closing date for entries. All short films must arrive at the LIT Film Festival desk by end of business on Friday March 9th.

To note all entries must be accompanied by an application form (which is available on the Entry Form page.)

This year the special prizes are for the best short film from students of either 2nd Level or 3rd Level institutions. Sony Professional are sponsoring again and the prize details will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Entries from general public, independent and small production companies are also accepted and there will be details of prizes for this category also released in the coming weeks.

This years festival sees extra attention on young film makers and their ability to share their imagination on screen. There will be multiple opportunities to share ideas, listen to professionals, and sample the latest equipment available from top industry manufactures such as Sony Professional as well as Irish distributors including D&P Products.

More details will be released shortly.

Experience some of the best attributes and experiences on offer in this excellently produced video to promote all that is great about Limerick City.

I was delighted to be of some help to Matt and Marion in its production. Well done to them!!

 

Local Heros Meeting

Local Heroes is an RTÉ-supported initiative focused on dealing with unemployment through local, citizen-lead initiatives.

The RTÉ TV series ‘Local Heroes – A Town Fights Back’ has shown Drogheda’s citizens coming together to jump-start their local economy and create jobs.

Their imaginative solutions to tackle unemployment, guided by experts, inspired us to create our own Limerick Local Heroes group.

There has been confirmation that Animo TV Production will have a team filming our town hall meeting in  the Strand Hotel on Monday 30 Jan 2012 from 6pm

The same crew was involved in the filming and production of the  RTE series ‘Local Heroes – A Town Fights Back‘ in Drogheda last year.

Our own local Red Paw Media, well known for productions like “Concy Ryan” and the Rubberbandits’ Horse  Outside, who had already kindly agreed to support the Limerick Local Heroes initiative , will also be filming the event.

Every community needs its Local Heroes!

Limerick to get a New Media Hub

If this project goes ahead this will certainly create new openings and opportuinities for both the media student and local film maker alike. Limerick has a wide variety of talent in this sector and a hub like this will cerrainly help film makers get their projects seen.
