It’s all ‘Elemental’ my friends

On Saturday, 15th September 2012, the streets of Limerick will come alive to welcome both visitors and native Limerick people alike to the inaugural Elemental Arts & Culture Festival.

The festival encompasses the arts in all their guises, from interactive street art, dance and short films, to street performers and a talk on a very special lost local hero.

The day is designed to keep everybody happy. Start the day at the People’s Park at 10am with laughter yoga followed by tai chi and dance.

Go back to school from 12pm – 3pm at the Frank McCourt Museum for puzzles, funny portraits and all things fun-related. No 1 Pery Square plays host to the Lady Heath talk at 2.30pm.

Moving down to Bedford Row and Thomas Street, which will be the main hub for street activity, there will be local actor Myles Breen with his tea dance.

From 11am – 4pm, the Hunt Museum will showcase a number of skilled craftsmen and women, from a woodturner to a farrier and a Limerick lace maker, shining a light on these forgotten skills.

Helena Enright, with her ‘River Shannon Project’ will gather information at Arthur’s Quay Centre during Elemental to present in a ‘Theatre of Testimony’ reading later that evening while Behind the Scenes Film Network Group will feature an installation of short films on the theme of the elements.  The George Boutique Hotel will host a series of short films each relating to one of the elements, from 12pm to 2pm in the hotel. All the films have been supplied by the film makers and members of the Behind The Scenes group, based in Limerick and serve the midwest.
So for one day only it promises to be a festival not to be missed.

Film in a Day – Killer Recession

This week gone saw three crews of film makers create a ‘Film In A Day’ for this months Behind the Scenes session, and what a trio of films they were. It is by no means an easy feat to bring together so many different people and ideas and create one film let alone three.

With Mark Griffin overseeing the project as a whole, All the teams first met at the George Boutique Hotel in Limerick at 10am on the Sunday. Here Jacinta and her great staff looked after the teas and coffee’s while the teams worked out games plans and other elements for their films.

Filming and editing took place from 11am on the Sunday to 3pm Monday afternoon where the three films then got their chance on the big screen at the Millennium Theatre at Limerick Institute of Technology.

Film 1 – Stamp

This film was very cleverly thought out from beginning to end. With a low dialogue script but heavy on imagery and performances, namely from Maeve McGrath, was shot in 4 different locations including dock road Limerick, raheen and Curraghchase. Given the premise of a post nuclear fallout and betrayal, the audience journeyed with the main character in a battle of survival.

Film 2 – Dr. Noel Hope

Nigel Mercier and Eoin Moloney deliver fantastic comedic perforamces with a heart warming ending that certainly left the audience wanting to see more. With locations on the streets of Limerick and on the quays by the Shannon river, dr.Noel Hope delivers his original advise on unsuspecting patients.

Film 3 – Killer Recession

This was Andrew O’Gorman’s script and more so his moment to show how good of an actor he is too. A chilling piece detailing an interrogation of a terrorist in a city location. With multiple cameras and even a Stephen Hall trademark explosion, chaos ensues as the captor finds his moment to escape.

In all, a great two days and a second ‘film in a day’ is planned for later in the year.

Date: Sunday 24th June 2012. 

Crew Briefing Venue – George Hotel, Limerick

Meeting Time – 11:00am Sharp.

Brief  Outline

  • Film in a Day will involve – ‘Idea to Distribution’
  • The script must be a maximum 3 minutes long, and should be ready before Sunday 24th june 2012.
  • All Crews  should also have their cast ready with locations etc arranged and permissions granted.
  • Once the Crews have been briefed on Sunday 24th June 2012, at the George Hotel, starting at 11:00am Sharp. Each crew is then free to film, and edit their productions.
  • Final DVD’s of the completed film must be submitted to Simon McGuire at LIT Millennium Theatre by 3pm on Monday 25th June 2012.

 How Do I take Part

A crew consists of five crew members, Please complete the form below with your crew members various roles for the production.

If you do not have a crew at present, please email us behindthesceneslimerick{at]gmail.com and we will endeavor to put you into a suitable crew. Please state your preferred Crew Role in your email.

Will I receive Confirmation of registration?

When you complete the form correctly a message will appear on screen to advise you that you have successfully completed the form.

What is the entry Fee?

This is a free event.

Will my Film be Screened?

All completed films will be screened on Monday 25th June 2012 at the LIT Millennium Theatre at 7pm at the Behind the Scenes Monthly Meeting.

Where do I source my Actors from?

Each crew will be responsible for their own cast.

Are my Actors included in my Crew Numbers

Actors are not included in the Crew Roles, as each crew my have different cast requirements.

Behind the Scenes Meeting for May

Behind the Scenes is a newly formed network of people in the Midwest working in or studying Video and Film Production. The group was created with the intention of bringing together like minded individuals to study and promote Film and Video Production in the Munster Area. With an exciting programme of workshops identified to include editing, equipment, software, lighting, sound & much more, Behind the Scenes is the perfect opportunity to meet and network with editors, creative people and filmmakers who work in the local Film Industry.

Our next Meeting for May will have a slight change to our schedule as we will meet on Tuesday 29th May at The Absolute Hotel at 7pm where we will screen some of the recent Short Film entries from the LIT Film Festival with a Q+A session after.

Behind the Scenes is the perfect opportunity to meet and network with editors, creative people and filmmakers who work in the local Film Industry.

We welcome new members and we meet on the first Monday of each month.

Diego In Limerick!

MWRA and Limerick City Council host DIEGO seminar in Limerick – 26th April 2012

This seminar, organised by the Mid-West Regional Authority and Limerick City Council, was held on Thursday, 26th April 2012 in the Clarion Hotel, Steamboat Quay, Limerick City from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. The seminar aimed to present the policies and trends in Ireland with regard to Digital Inclusion and the progress to date of implementing the Digital Agenda for Europe.

The seminar also presented the DIEGO pilot currently underway in Limerick and some of the results to date. The pilot, accessible through the simply.limerick.ie website aims to make some Limerick City Council services and information available to citizens who may have a lack of digital skills.

We were commissioned to create an effective and creative piece that explains the impact on the ground DIEGO is creating. The finished piece had a playout at the seminar and was well received.

Well done to all involved including all the help from Ronan Murphy, Limerick Community Connect; Deirdre Byrne, Mid West Regional Authority; and Mihai Bilauca of Limerick City Council.

Limerick to get a New Media Hub

If this project goes ahead this will certainly create new openings and opportuinities for both the media student and local film maker alike. Limerick has a wide variety of talent in this sector and a hub like this will cerrainly help film makers get their projects seen.

Escapade Music Video
