The programme of events was launch yesterday and there has been hugh interest in the festival. Out of 70 application forms, 45 films made it in. We would like to say a big thankyou to everyone who entered. The films are currently being judged and sorted in to the catagories:

Best Camera, Best Lighting, Best Sound, Best Editing, Best Story, Best Acting, Best Director, Best Factual, Best Artistic, Best Drama, Special Adjudicators Award and Best Overall Film.

While we hope everyone gets a nomination in at least one catagory, some films may not reach the standard every category.

Screenings of the Films will be on Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th April at the Millennium Theatre.

As for the awards night… its going to be a big one with the glammour and glitz and red carpet. We have set up a special ticketing system for the Friday night event (15th April) and you can avail of that here.

The award winning film, The Pipe, will be showing on Tuesday 12th at the Millennium Theatre at the LIT Film Festival. (Time of Showing to be announced shortly)

Synopsis:

In a remote corner of the West of Ireland sits Broadhaven Bay. It is

the perfect picture postcard, where the high cliffs of Erris Head and

the Stags of Broadhaven stand sentry at the mouth of the bay against

the mighty Atlantic, as if protecting the delicate golden sands of

Glengad beach and the tiny village of Rossport, which nestles behind

the dunes. However, this peaceful tranquility belies the turmoil that

lies beneath, and the unique nature of the coastline which has

sustained generations of farmers and fishermen, has also delivered to

Shell Oil the perfect landfall for the Corrib Gas Pipeline.

In the most dramatic clash of cultures in modern Ireland, the rights

of farmers over their fields, and of fishermen to their fishing

grounds, has come in direct conflict with one of the worlds most

powerful oil companies. When the citizens look to their state to

protect their rights, they find that the state has put Shell’s right

to lay a pipeline over their own.

The Pipe is a story of a community tragically divided, and how they

deal with a pipe that could bring economic prosperity or destruction

of a way of life shared for generations.

Film Ireland have written an article detailing the 2nd Annual LIT FILM Festival 2011.

This is fantastic coverage for the festival. We are hoping that the rest of the national media will pick up on this article and go one better by covering the weeks events and promoting film and video production in the Mid-West. A special thanks to Eleanor McSherry on writing the piece.

Here’s the article in full as per the FilmIreland.net site

LIMERICK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 2ND ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL

ExclusivesFeaturedNews

Want a chance to show off that film that’s on your mobile? Or that YouTube movie that you filmed last summer? Or your final year project for college that you sweated buckets over to make? Well Limerick City’s Technical College might just have the Film Festival for you!

In 2010 Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) assistant lecturer and media professional, Simon McGuire realised that there was a need for a film festival for third level students in the Mid West. He wanted to provide a place to showcase new talent. With the current rise in film production courses and with the popularity of websites like YouTube, it seemed like just the ticket.

In its inaugural year (2010) the festival boasted a strong attendance on the day with 20 people attending the Workshops and 120 attending the awards night at the Millennium Theatre. Also there were 223 viewers (approx) online watching the live video stream (using six cameras) on www.litvchannel.net. The judging panel consisted of members of the professional media industry, who represented technical and non-technical areas. They included Matt Kelly and Marion Malone of Matt Kelly Productions and Laura Ryan of the Limerick Co-ordination office. This was excellent for a first run and showed that there was a definite need for this kind of festival in the Mid West.

Last year’s festival was only a one-day event and open to third-level students. This year the festival will be over five days and open to the general public. It will not just be about the film competition either as there will be plenty for those interested in getting into the film industry in Ireland. There will be a variety of talks, workshops, film viewings, an awards night, an industry exhibition and much more, all given by industry professionals. Its founder has great ambitions for the potential of this style of festival and they hope to add much more to its programme over the next couple of years.

The criteria for the film competition is quite open. There is no limit on the length of film. It can be in any genre. The entry form deadline is the 28th of January, with the film entry deadline on the 31st of March 2011. There is also no entry fee. All they ask is that it is on a DVD and can be played easily. So far they have a lot of interested from all over the country.

The festival will take place from the 11th to the 15th of April, 2011 in Limerick Institute of Technology. So don’t just sit there and wonder ‘what if’. Get out and film something, be creative and send it off. You never know!

Workshops from a number of industry professionals in several fields of television production and post production.

Film Entry Viewing at the Millennium Theatre, LIT

And on the success of last years event, the Awards Night for the Film Competition itself followed by an after show party to round off the night and to end the Festival.

Due to the competition being open to the General public this year as well as college students the interest in entering has been strong with entries from Limerick, Cork, Carlow and Dundalk to name but a few.

Hello all,

Well 2010 has drawn to a close and we are busy in preparing the 2nd Annual LIT Film Festival for you. Similar to last year we will be having the awards night which will be streamed live on a dedicated website. We are also in the middle of organizing the exhibition. As part of the 1st festival back in April we had a workshop on the Sony NXCAM format and camera. For 2011, we are preparing some great workshops for everyone but we would like your opinions too.

If there is a topic or subject you would like to see discussed by an industry expert then let us know on the email address below.

We will use the feedback to book workshops according to demand.

More on this soon.
Simon.
